KBI Herpetoculture is the result of a lifelong fascination with animals; especially reptiles, amphibians, and arachnids. Yes, I was the little preschool kid that used to catch bugs to feed to the spiders living around the yard...the little boy that caught toads every spring and released them in the fall, shortly after school started. I still remember when I got my first lizard: a green anole...only they were marketed as "chameleons" back then (keep in mind, this was the early 70's). Growing up, if I saw a toad, frog, turtle, or snake, I tried to catch it. Well, there was that first black ratsnake...but he was huge. Never had I seen a snake of such monstrous proportions. To this day, thoughts of that snake still bring a smile to my face - I know he was probably only 6 ft long, but I would have sworn he was AT LEAST twice that...the way he was stretched all the way across that path. And when he coiled back, hissed, and shot away...that was it for me. As I grew in this hobby, I found the local herp group. I made some great friends and learned a lot. My collection continued to expand, and I became involved with the Catskill Reptile Institute. Monitors, big pythons, crocodilians, venomous...I had them all. I did some breeding, but at that time I was more involved with education and exhibitions (and getting really cool stuff). Well, life happened; and I got rid of almost everything and left the state. (Life happened again, and I came back). I was "out of this" for 6 years - in my case, that meant keeping only a few favorite animals. Honestly, I figured I was done with that whole part of my life. Surprise! rock pythons or retics...just a nice mixture of snakes. Sizes that will fit your home, prices that will fit your budget. But why "KBI"? Meet the boys behind the name: |
